Diseases and Causes of death:

1.        Colic- acute abdominal spasm and pain, which may be caused by kidney stones or gallstones or other conditions

2.        Consumption-tuberculosis

1.        Debility-probably premature baby if referring to infant

2.        Erysipelas-skin disease caused by streptococci bacteria, which can cause blood poisoning in some cases

3.        Hives-skin eruption, nonfatal; may actually be croup

4.        Hydrothorax-“water” in thorax; congestive heart failure

5.        Intermittent Fever-probably malaria

6.        Sarfula-maybe scrofula, which is the former name of tuberculous cervical lymphadenitis.

 

Statistics:

1.        Number of deaths June 1, 1869-June 1, 1870-192

2.        Infants under 1 year accounted for 70% of the deaths  

3.        34% of deaths caused by meningitis, cerebrospinal fever and brain fever (vast majority in Precinct 1)

4.        15% of deaths caused by pneumonia

5.        15% of deaths caused by consumption, lung inflammation and lung hemorrhage

6.        15% of deaths caused by whooping cough

7.        9% of deaths caused by intermittent and remittent fevers (malaria)

8.        8% of deaths caused by violence, either intentional or accidental

9.        17% of deaths caused by gastrointestinal disorders/diseases

10.     Seven out of eight deaths caused by debility were infants 1 month or less in age (possibly prematurity)
